How Much Does an Epoxy Floor Cost?

You’ve done your research and know all about the benefits and beauty that an epoxy floor can bring to your space.  But can you afford an epoxy floor coating?  Should you hire a professional to install your floor, or should you do it yourself?  There are many factors that go into determining the final cost of an epoxy floor coating, but here are some broad estimates to help in the decision making process.  You’ll find that epoxy flooring is more affordable than you might think!

For professional installation, epoxy floor coatings generally cost between $4 and $9 per square foot.  So for a standard two-car garage, you can expect to pay between $1,750 and $4,000.  The price varies with the type of epoxy selected, the number of coatings applied, the condition of the concrete to which the epoxy is being applied, and other general conditions and details at the job site.

If you decide to install your epoxy floor yourself, you can expect to spend approximately $1.50 to $2.50 per square foot.  Water based epoxy can be up to one third of the price of solid epoxy (as little as $0.50 per square foot for the cheapest epoxies); however, solid epoxy is much longer lasting and requires much less maintenance.  Unless your concrete slab is brand new, remember to factor in the cost of any concrete patches or primers that you may need as well.

While the savings from installing your epoxy floor yourself are significant (purchasing only the materials for a standard two-car garage will cost between $650 and $1,000, for a savings of up to $3,000), remember that installing epoxy is a three day job at a minimum.  You’ll need to prep the concrete, apply the epoxy coating (at least two coats of epoxy is recommended), then seal the floor.  Other optional items like color flakes or a slip resistant additive to the top coat will cost more and will take time to apply as well.

Even if you plan to install your own epoxy floor, we recommend getting at least one or two quotes for professional installation.  There may be details in your space that you overlooked and would not have known to address, and you just might decide that the cost of professional installation is worth the time and effort it will save you.

However you decide to install your epoxy floor coating, be sure to do your research, get several quotes on both materials and labor, and take your time to make an informed decision that you will be happy with in the long run.  While you will definitely save money by installing your floor yourself, the extra cost of professional installation might be well worth it to be able to simply come home and admire your beautiful new floor!
